Some of Jan's observations:
Many people find learning a foreign language daunting, especially in a large class. This is especially true of adolescents, as they are at the age when they are at their most self-conscious, and so find it particularly difficult to make strange noises in front of their peers!
Some adults who would like to learn a language cannot manage to get to suitable adult education classes, as they already have so much to juggle in their lives.
Many students of all ages find learning grammatical rules particularly challenging, as, in some cases, they have not really understood the grammar of their own language. I aim to teach by analogy, and I try to keep jargon to the absolute minimum. THE NEED TO MASTER GRAMMATICAL RULES WILL BE VITAL FOR GCSE ENTRANTS FROM 2018 ONWARDS, AS THE EXAM IS MOVING TO A LINEAR ASSESSMENT FORMAT.
Learning away from their peers can be particularly helpful to boys, as, away from their classmates, they are able to focus and share their concerns with a sympathetic adult, without fear of ridicule.
My students invariably make far better progress with me than they could have done without the personalised service which I offer, and this boosts their confidence in the school or work environment too, which is an added benefit.
